The other capital (day 14)

I considered covering DC in one post but decided not to.

Too many photos from my first night!

In the photo below, you can see National Mall (strip of green just right of centre), with the Washington Monument at one end and the US Capitol the other.

I caught a taxi from the airport to the B&B (photos to come). DC immediately reminded me of Canberra.

Wide open spaces, carefully planned streets, national institutions and monuments, and people jogging everywhere.

White House

I worked my way from the National Museum of American History to the White House, then Lincoln Memorial.

Lincoln Memorial

Surrounding the Reflecting Pool and Tidal Basin are memorials to World War II, Vietnam War, Korean War, Martin Luther King Jr, Franklin D Roosevelt and Thomas Jefferson.

You can learn a lot from who and what a nation commemorates - its values and history, for example.

I'm starting to understand why freedom, independence and liberty are so important to Americans - then and now.

It was hard-won.

Tidal Basin (reminds me of Lake Burley Griffin)
